What is Digital Mail?

Digital mail is your original postal mail that is scanned and delivered straight to the inmate’s secured tablet.

When does the Digital Mail platform launch?

Digital Mail platform is rolling out to the following units starting July 17, 2023:

  • Allred
  • Clements
  • Coffield
  • East Texas ISF
  • Garza West
  • Halbert
  • Plane
  • Polunsky
  • Powledge
  • Robertson

What happens if I send mail to the units after July 17, 2023?

The mail will be denied and sent back to the sender.

How do I address a letter to an inmate?

All general inmate mail must be addressed using the inmate’s commitment full name, TDCJ number, and unit of assignment to the digital mail processing center for scanning and electronic distribution.

What if I don’t write the inmate number or their full name on the envelope?

The mail will be returned to the sender.

Can I send as much digital mail as I would like?

Yes!

How quickly will my loved one receive my mail?

Mail will be available within three business days.

What if my loved one doesn’t have a tablet?

Inmates who do not have a tablet will receive black and white printed copies of their correspondence.

Will my loved one always have access to Digital Mail received during incarceration?

Yes! A major benefit of the new digital mail program is that all mail is stored and accessible to your loved one to permanently enjoy.

What will be accepted for scanning?

Only written correspondence, greeting cards, drawings, and photos will be accepted for scanning.

What will not be accepted for scanning?

Legal mail, certified mail, media mail, books, magazines, packages, and other subscriptions will not be accepted at the processing center and should be sent to the unit.

When can greeting cards be sent?

With our new digital mail program, greeting cards can be sent at any time!

Can packages be sent to the Digital Mail processing center?

No, they will be returned to sender. Please send all packages to the unit.

Where do veterans, Social Security and disability checks get sent?

These checks should be sent directly to the unit.

What happens to my mail once it arrives at the Digital Mail processing center?

All incoming and outgoing correspondence is subject to delivery, inspection, and rejection. Scanned mail is stored for 90 days before professional disposal. Should senders wish to receive their physical mail back after scanning, they should include a self-addressed stamped envelope in their correspondence.

Is there a cost to me or my loved one for this service?

No!

Do the inmates know about the Digital Mail service?

Yes!

A few weeks following the initial launch.
